Back in December 1944, King Tiger #212 of s.Pz.Abt. 501 found itself navigating the snowy, narrow roads of the Ardennes Offensive, widely known as the Battle of the Bulge. Sporting the "Ambush" (Hinterhalt-Tarnung) camouflage pattern to blend into the wooded terrain, this tank was part of the desperate German push to reach Antwerp and split the Allied lines. The turret bore the number 212 painted in red with a yellow outline, identifying it within the battalion as they engaged American forces in the freezing winter conditions. Like many in its unit during this campaign, its journey was defined by the harsh geography and logistical issues that eventually stalled the advance.
Mechanically, this Tiger II was fitted with the production Henschel turret, which offered a streamlined profile compared to earlier designs. Its primary weapon was the 8.8 cm KwK 43 L/71 gun, a high-velocity cannon capable of penetrating the armor of almost any opposing tank at significant range. The vehicle relied on heavy, sloped armor plating that reached 150mm on the front hull for protection against incoming fire. However, moving nearly 70 tons of steel required a Maybach HL 230 P30 engine, which often struggled under the immense weight, making fuel consumption and mechanical reliability constant concerns in the field.
