Back in France around 1944, this U.S. M2A1 105mm Howitzer was hard at work with an unidentified unit of the US Army. As the standard light field howitzer for the United States during World War II, it saw extensive action across both the European and Pacific theaters. While the specific crew remains unknown, this artillery piece would have been manned by a team operating from behind sandbag emplacements, providing essential fire support to infantry units pushing through the French countryside.
Technically, this howitzer is finished in the standard Olive Drab and is defined by its practical design elements. It utilizes a split-trail carriage which provided the gun crew with better stability and a wider traverse range during firing missions. The design also incorporates a recoiling barrel mechanism to handle the kick from the 105mm rounds. It represents the workhorse nature of American field artillery during the war, functioning reliably in the field without unnecessary flash.
