DAK Surrender Scene: Afrika Korps in Steel Helmets
Between 1941 and 1943 the Deutsches Afrikakorps fought Rommel's war of movement across Libya and Egypt, and tens of thousands of its men ended the campaign as prisoners of the Commonwealth. Many were taken in the aftermath of Second El Alamein in November 1942, and around a quarter of a million Axis troops surrendered in Tunisia in May 1943. Captured soldiers were marched back under British guard before shipment to camps as far away as Canada and the United States.
This 4-figure scene shows a British infantryman in a Brodie helmet, rifle and bayonet levelled, escorting three Afrika Korps soldiers in steel helmets (Stahlhelm): two prisoners walking with hands on their heads and one standing with both arms raised.
