The daily life of a German soldier was often defined by the quality of the warm meal provided by the 'Gulaschkanone' and the brief moments of respite found in the rear areas. These 'Etappen' (rear echelons) provided a stark contrast to the front, where soldiers could enjoy camaraderie, music, and fresh rations. Such gatherings were essential for psychological recovery, often featuring impromptu musical performances by soldiers who carried instruments like trumpets or accordions in their baggage train, fostering a sense of normalcy amidst the chaos of the campaign.\n\nThis is a full diorama portraying a lively field mess scene. The set includes 11 figures: 3 field cooks in aprons, 6 soldiers receiving food or dining, 1 soldier playing a trumpet, and 1 singing officer; the scene is furnished with 2 large trestle tables, a bench, a stool, large cooking pots, stacks of plates, bowls, and various food items including bread and sausages, all set on a tiled floor base.
